How CBD Can Support the Wellness of Your Furry Companion

CBD treats for dogs and cats is quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing natural wellness alternatives for pets.

The cannabinoid, CBD works by activating the body’s endocannabinoid system. And this system is responsible for promoting a balanced state of wellbeing.

The current hype around CBD focuses on human consumption. Yet, the nice thing is, dogs and cats can also consume CBD!

CBD Treats for Pets

Most of the CBD found in dog and cat treats, including Hemp Health One’s pet product, is sourced from hemp. And the hemp plant naturally has large concentrations of CBD and low concentrations of THC. Unlike THC, there is no psychoactive compound in CBD.

Suggested CBD Usage

When you introduce CBD to your pet for the first time, it’s important to know a few things. It’s best to start with a small number of milligrams to gauge how your pet responds to CBD. The same general guidelines apply whenever you give something new to your pet.

If your pet experiences drowsiness or sedation, try cutting down on the dosage to allow them to build up a tolerance.

For more specific guidance, here are a few recommendations from veterinarians who often use CBD with their canine and feline patients.

pet owners use cbd

RECOMMENDATION 1:

Begin by giving your pet a low dose of 1 mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. Gradually, work up to 5 mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. You can give your pet this amount once or twice a day, depending on how they respond to it.

Although, there is no known toxicity associated with CBD, consult your holistic veterinarian if you want individualized instructions for your pet.

RECOMMENDATION 2:

Another suggestion by veterinarians is to start with 0.2 mg/kg twice a day and slowly work up to 0.5 mg/kg twice a day.

Example:

Let’s say your cat weighs 10 pounds, which converts to 4.5 kg.

To calculate the low dose, you multiply 0.2mg x 4.5kg = 0.9 mg, which rounds to 1 mg

To calculate the high dose, you multiply 0.5mg x 4.5kg = 2.25 mg, which you can round down to 2 mg, or round up to 2.5 mg

According to this calculation, you would give your pet 1 mg of CBD, twice daily for a small dose, and 2 - 2.5 mg for a large dose. Effectively, this calculation arrives at the same result as the first recommendation, with only a slight rounding variance. So, you can use whichever calculation your more comfortable with.

In Conclusion

Many veterinarians and pet owners are buying CBD for their cats and dogs because it may provide them a restorative experience. If you decide to buy CBD for your pets, its good to start with a low dose and observe how your pet responds.

As always, consult with your veterinarian before giving your pet a product that contains hemp-derived CBD.
